Battery Disasters – Hate to be late?

Battery maintenance is so easy to forget… if only she had checked her battery – but luckily she still made it on time!

One day, I was at a car park at a shopping mall in Brisbane on my way back to the workshop after doing a battery replacement, walking across the way. Across from me I spotted a woman walking around her car looking upset, with her bonnet up. Curious as to what the matter was, I approached and offered help. She thanked me, told me she was running late to travel to an appointment, and her car wouldn’t start!
I told her I’d be back in a minute. I went back to the van, grabbed my gear, came back and put my head under the bonnet. The verdict? The battery was very old and badly corroded, and was on low voltage to boot. I asked her, if she did any regular battery checks as part of her cars maintenance? She had no idea! I explained the situation to her – that she needed to clean up her battery every now and again, get it tested, and eventually replaced every few years. She nodded and said she understood.
Now, I could have simply grabbed the jumper leads, helped her start her car and be on her way – but the battery could have failed again at the next set of lights. Sometimes it’s hard to be the bearer of bad news, but honesty is always the best approach, and like any car maintenance, neglect will catch up with you. Fortunately, I had a compatible battery back in the van – the replacement took only minutes. She was pleased that the service was so quick, and was happy to tell me that she probably wouldn’t be late after all.
